St. John Academic Curriculum

The Blessing Place (CPH) - Created especially for our littlest children, The Blessing Place provides nurturing, age-appropriate curriculum with a Christ-centered focus. The Blessing Place is used in our 18 months and 2 year old programs.

Letter People – The Letter People develops oral language, phonological awareness, and letter identification in a developmentally appropriate hands-on interest setting. The Letter People puppets, songs, and stories stimulate the imagination and draw children into the learning process. The Letter People uses a thematic approach that focuses on phonemic awareness, language, science, math, and social skills. Small and large motor skills are all integrated into the lessons.

Handwriting Without Tears – HWT is a handwriting program based on the developmental activities of young children and uses a variety of multi-sensory activities. It incorporates music, movement, wood piece manipulatives, letter play, building, and coloring to develop fine motor skills.

Math Their Way – Math Their Way is a hands-on, problem-solving approach to learning math concepts for students. Math is incorporated throughout our day using math tubs, calendar time, and during learning centers.

Science – Science is incorporated throughout our curriculum during learning centers, outdoor play, and experiments done by teachers and observed and commented on by students.

Music & Motor Skills – The children have a music and motor skills class daily. During this time children experience singing, rhythm, and listening activities. Also included are activities that improve fine and gross motor coordination, creative movement, and expression.

Spanish – We offer Spanish lessons to all of the children with a fun-filled, hands-on curriculum. Through song and play, the children develop a love for learning language.

Art – We offer art appreciation classes to our 3’s, 4’s, and Bridge classes. The students are introduced to a variety of artists and the different techniques they use. Students are given the opportunity to participate in activities and projects that allow exploration with the various techniques.

Bridge Program – The Bridge program is a class for children who turn five by October 31st. It is specifically designed for children who are already five but need an extra year of preparation for kindergarten. This extra year provides children with an opportunity to excel when they enter kindergarten. Our Bridge teachers are degree certified teachers with a background in teaching Kindergarten.

Library – Our library is filled with a broad range of student literature, listening activities, teacher resources, puppets, and other valuable learning tools. The children visit the library each week for story-time and to read books. The older children and parents can check out books from the library.

Technology - The 3’s, 4’s, and Bridge students are provided a computer in each classroom. Our computers have age appropriate software to teach math, reading and phonetic awareness.

Parent Conferences – Toward the end of the year, every child is scheduled for a parent-teacher conference. Teachers are also available through the year if the need arises for a conference.
