St. John Lutheran Church News

GET ON BOARD WITH Member Connect:  If you are a member of St. John and have not yet logged on to Member Connect you are missing out.  Member Connect is an easy way for the St. John family to communicate among ministry groups, access the calendar of events etc. If you have any questions, please phone the church office.  We will be happy to assist you.

Electronic copy of the Eagle: To help St. John with reducing the amount of paper costs each month, please let us know if you would like to receive an electronic version of the Eagle instead of the hard copy version you receive in the U.S. mail.  Simply with your request.

Lent - Jesus for Every Woman and Man: People often associate the Lenten observance with only the more traditional and liturgically-minded churches and people. But the message of Lent is a message for every woman and man. Women facing hardship, men enjoying great blessing: both need Jesus. Whether as a helper or as a grounding influence in our lives: we all need Jesus.

Lenten Devotions—Where in the World is God? These 40 days of devotions for Lent touch us in our modern-day world and use Scripture to help us answer the questions we often have about how our God meets us in our 21st-century surroundings.  Please pick up your copy today.

Lenten Schedule Join us each Wednesday throughout the season of Lent for meditations at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. A light meal will be served from 5:30-6:45 p.m. (Please refer to the February Eagle for a list of meals.)

Servant Event/Mission Trip: Every year, hundreds of organizations provide opportunities for congregations like St. John to gain hands-on experience in the mission field.  Have you ever put up drywall in a house? Are you interested in helping a family with a leaky roof?  Would you consider teaching children in Costa Rica about Jesus through songs and games? LC-MS Servant Event Coordinators are still looking for volunteers in El Paso, New Orleans, Angel Fire, New Mexico, and Esparza-Costa Rica (Go to http://www.lcms.org/ca/dcs/SERVevents/sehome.asp for more information).  If you are interested in either a domestic or foreign servant event, or how we as a congregation can become involved in activities like this, please contact Pastor Stephen DeMik at .

Tuition Hike Approved by UH Regents….. Main campus raised 3.95 percent; law school increasing 16.5 percent.  Houston Chronicle 2/17/10—If headlines like this recent one grab your attention, then you’re probably already concerned about planning for one or more college educations. You know you need to do something and have probably already heard that the sooner you start the better. But for what do you plan and how can you possibly pay for some or all of it? The Stewardship Committee is pleased to announce on Sunday, March 28 at 12:15 in the Administration Center, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will be offering the FREE workshop Focus On College Funding. If you have children and college is in their future, plan on joining us by signing up in the Narthex or Fellowship Center. Learn more about how to prepare so headlines like these don’t give you added  cause for concern.

The Mission and Ministry Council (MMC) - As we look to a new form of congregational governance, the MMC will be the main governing body for the St. John Lutheran Church & School.  We, the congregation of St. John Lutheran Church, recognize that Jesus Christ is the Head of the church, and that, as the Head, Jesus has entrusted His mission to us. The MMC will be elected by the congregation at the Voters meeting each year. Their duties will be executed through the development and maintenance of a written set of Guiding Principles, while allowing for flexibility in achieving God’s mission. Their responsibilities will include the following:

· safeguard God’s sacred trust of His Church to our care
· oversee the general health, financial condition, and strategic ministry plan of our congregation
· set policies for how the organization will operate
· provide accountability and support for the work of the Senior Pastor and staff

Governance Transition Town Hall Meetings—As we continue to grow and prepare ourselves to serve as God’s instruments once we are in our Worship Center, a new constitution is being prepared. Three opportunities are planned for people to learn about and discuss the desire to change our congregational governance:

- March 28 (Sunday - 5 p.m.)
- April 11 (Sunday - 12:15 p.m.)
- May 3 (Monday - 7 p.m.)

All Town Hall Meetings will meet in the Administration Center. The Governance Transition Team (appointed by Darrell Wehlmann, Congregation President) includes: Richard Kolodziejcyk (chairman), Beth Chelton, Rusty Collins, Becky Graeber,  Steve Green, Kim McCully, and Mike Michaelis. They welcome your questions and comments.
